What is Cyber Essentials?
The Cyber Essentials scheme has been developed by Government and industry to fulfil two main functions. The first of these is to provide a framework of basic controls that all organisations can implement that will help them to mitigate the risks from common internet based threats. The core of this common threats is based on the Governments 10 Steps to Cyber Security. Secondly the scheme can also function as an assurance framework, that will offers allow organisations the ability to demonstrate to their customers, investors, insurers and others that they have taken these essential precautions.
Cyber Essentials offers a solid foundation for businesses to develop their cyber security controls measures that all types of organisations can implement and potentially build upon.
It is important to reflex that although implementing the these measures can significantly reduce an organisation's vulnerability it will not remove all cyber security risk. Ultimately Cyber Essentials offers a focused set of controls that can provide organisations with a cost effective approach to limit the risks their organisation faces.
Which controls does Cyber Essentials cover?
Cyber Essentials covers five key controls:
- Boundary firewalls and internet gateways – prevention of unauthorized access
- Secure configuration – ensures secure system configuration
- Access Control – ensures appropriate access to systems
- Malware protection – installation and maintenance of virus and malware protection
- Patch management – application of patches and ensuring the latest version of applications is used
